New Herbal Arrivals: Butterfly Pea, Elderberry, and Hawthorn Berries!

New Herbal Arrivals

We are always adding to our inventory and our new herbal arrivals are amazing.

Butterfly Pea Tea

Clitoria TernateaClitoria Ternatea, also known as butterfly pea, Asian pidgeon wings, Shankapushi, and other names, is a flower that grows in tropical Asia, Thailand, and Malaysia.
Primarily used in treating neurological issues, especially memory and depression, it has other health benefits that Ayurvedic medicine has benefited from for generations.

Another unique property to this herb is that it will turn any clear liquid blue.  This is very whimsical and can be fun for parties as you can color your drinks naturally.  We added this to some hibiscus tea and it turned a beautiful purple.

Elderberry

ElderberriesLong known for their powerful antioxidants elderberries have been used to boost the immune system, prevent and cure colds and flu, lower cholesterol and more.  These have been a bit difficult to get lately as they have been in large demand due to a powerful flu season.

We like to combine these with other healing herbs to create even more powerful infusions that help everyone get over sickness faster and even prevent getting sick in the first place.

Hawthorn Berries

Hawthorn BerriesHawthorn is a well established mild heart tonic which has been especially useful in treating congestive heart failure.  We have had the cut leaves and flowers in stock for some time which are perfect for making an infusion, but the berries are what you want to use when making a decoction or tincture.

Still Relocation Complete

Our Still Has a New Home

Still New LocationSince moving into our new store we have been, slowly, moving production here and today we got the still moved and started a distillation of Witch Hazel.  After that is finished we will start getting caught up with some co-op distillations of Sage and Rosemary that Joshua Francy brought us.

We are very excited to have the still moved as this will allow us to run it much more often and we won’t have to buy so much ice as it has it’s own cold water source now.  Previously we had a bucket of ice water that was pumped into the condenser which draws the steam from the column and cools it down.  This was rather cumbersome as we had to monitor the temperature of the water in the bucket and add more ice to keep it cool as well as remove water so it did not overflow.

Next time you are here be sure to stop in and ask if we are distilling anything, we would love to show you what we are up to.

Allergy and Cold Relief

Did you wake up today with a scratchy throat or allergy symptoms that just won’t go away?  We had a combination of these so today we brewed up a tea to help soothe your throat and naturally treat your allergies.
We combined our Rooibos tea which has great anti-inflammatory and allergy relief properties with Slippery Elm which helps soothe scratchy throats, Peppermint which helps relieve coughing as well as headaches and digestive issues, and lastly a bit of Stevia leaf to help sweeten it all up.

This time of year is horrid for those of us that suffer from allergies, chronic headaches, and other ailments that are susceptible to changes in our weather.  For that reason, we have made sure to keep in stock herbs, teas, and other remedies that are effective in treating these without causing harmful side effects or simply masking the symptoms in hopes that they go away.

Foragers Wanted!

Good morning, I hope everyone got to work/school and the such safely.  Today’s tea is Darjeeling with Hibiscus, Galangal, and Stevia which will give you a little caffeine kick with a nice citrus and ginger finish.  We really like to use stevia leaf in our blends as it adds natural sweetness without calories and is very easy to control in its leaf form.

We are also looking for Foragers to help provide some local medicinal herbs to our store.  If you have access to land that you commonly forage and there are no pesticides or other contamination we would like to talk to you.  We are working on a verification system to ensure we are getting quality ingredients that were harvested in a sustainable manner and with proper permissions.

We Made Rose Hydrosol Today

Today we got out the still and made a batch of rose hydrosol using some of our dried Egyptian rose buds and petals.  Rose hydrosol has many uses including body sprays, air fresheners, cooking, and cocktails.

A lot of over the counter rose waters are highly diluted rose hydrosol but ours is right out of the still which makes it much more potent and allows you to dilute it to your liking.

We also have Lavender, Rosemary, Eucalyptus, and Frankincense hydrosols that will be on our shelves this week.  We also encourage you to bring your own container to fill up or we have some on hand as well.

Calendula Infused Apricot Kernel Oil

This is so exciting that we had to post it right away even though we haven’t even finished making labels for it.  Our Calendula infused Apricot Kernel Oil is finally ready after it’s long rest on the shelf.

Calendula is one of the powerhouse herbs that are effective in treating burns, soothe the pain of injuries and irritation, and promote the healing of wounds.  The infused apricot kernel oil is ready to use as is or you can add other essential oils to it, like Copaiba, to further enhance its properties.
We have it packaged in convenient 15cc amber containers with a good sealing lid so it will stay fresh for quite some time.

Stay tuned because in a few weeks we will have our Arnica infused oil finished as well.

Alternative to OTC Cold Relief

We previously posted a couple of natural throat and cough relief infusions and today we have one to help get that nasty mucous out of your lungs and bring you some relief.
There are a few over the counter (OTC) pills you can get that do this but they have any number of side effects, a very frightening one is that they can increase mental depression.  As if your cold wasn’t bad enough the treatment is going to make you feel bad about it?  I don’t think so.

Enter the herbal power houses of Horehound, Mullein, and Thyme.  Horehound is a gentle stimulating expectorant, Mullein helps sooth your cough and Thyme is an amazing antimicrobial, antispasmodic and bronchial relaxant.  In short it will gently encourage mucous to be expelled from your lungs while soothing your throat and lungs and helping your body to heal itself to get over the cold.

Another benefit to this treatment is that it is a fraction of the cost of an OTC pill.  You simply add 3 grams of each herb to 2 cups of water and boil it for 15 minutes.  After the boiling is finished thoroughly strain it into a sealable jar, great use for empty jelly jars, and take a tablespoon multiple times throught the day.

We will be making an infusion of this tomorrow morning that you can come and try.  We can also measure the herbs out for you and combine them into serving size bags.

Cough Remedy and Immune Booster

When our herbs arrived I needed to test out a few things like our scale, bags, and measuring devices.  To accomplish this I decided to make a blend that would hopefully help with our daughters seemingly non-stop cough, you know that one we all get this time of year and none of the cold remedies work?

I sat down with some of our herb books and decided on 3 herbs that would make up the remedy: 2g Galangal root, 1g Mullein Leaf, and 1g Echinacea leaf.   I took this home and simmered it in 473ml of water (that’s about 2 cups) for 5 minutes and then let it rest for another 15 minutes before straining.

The resulting infusion was very pleasing to smell and our daughter gobbled up the spoonful that I gave her without any foul remarks or issues.  That night she was not coughing and when she woke up she was quite chipper.
