Chai Tea Friday! (with a twist)

Peppermint Cocoa Chai

It’s Friday which means it’s time to brew up some chai.

Today we crushed some cocoa nibs and added some peppermint and stevia to our Chai tea blend.  The result is an amazingly mellow, cooling mint, spicy chai which really matches the mood today.

Chai isn’t just for lattes

Don’t get me wrong here, I love a chai tea latte, especially when it gets dirty with a shot of espresso, but sometimes I don’t want that heavy of a drink.  This is one of the reasons we like to experiment with our Chai tea blend and see what we can come up with sans steamed milk and foam.

More teas and things on Saturday

We are really looking forward to attending this year’s Aberdeen Founders Day Parade and Street Fair.  We will have some of our loose tea as well as a few of our custom blends,   We are also bringing our remedies, essential oils, and other healing products.

There will be a lot of other great vendors, music, and food. Hope to see you there!

Cloud Buster Tea

Bust those clouds with today’s tea

Cloud Buster is a blend of Bancha Green Tea, Kava Kava, Greater Galangal, and Stevia.  Full of anti-oxidants, with a little spice and mood lifting properties we’re sure you will see the sun through any cloud.

Bancha is a wonderful green tea that has shown to improve mental alertness, lower cholesterol levels, and prevent infections.
Kava Kava is a mild pain reducer as well as mood balancer.  It has also been used to help quit smoking.
Galangal is very high in anti-oxidants and is a powerful anti-inflammatory.  This has also been used to help fight cancer and supports mental acuity.  This is also a wonderful type of ginger that you can use in cooking, especially red meats as it assists with more complete digestion.
Stevia makes things deliciously sweet with very low calories and no sugar.  10 Stevia leaves are the equivalent of 1 tablespoon of sugar, in sweetness, and is only 1 calorie.

Did you know we can bag it up for you?

We have press and seal tea bags that we can take any of your or our tea blends and make tea bags for you.  This is a great way to get the tea you want in a more portable form.  You can also buy the components as well as the bags and seal them yourself at home, all you need is an iron (we even used a mini hair straightener once).

All New Tea Blends

Three New Tea Blends

We have been hard at work coming up with new tea blends that help with headaches, sleep, and that time of the month.  We will have all three of them at the upcoming Aberdeen Founders Day Parade on Saturday, June 30th.

Headache and Migraine Blend

We have our headache remedy roll-on which is great for regular headaches, but recently we have had to treat some really daunting ones and the dreaded migraine.

Our headache and migraine blend has been working great for us and those we have treated.  This works even better when combined with feverfew capsules and a gentle massage.

Nighttime Tea Blend

This is our favorite blend to brew up at night as we are settling in for the night.  It is a perfect blend of tea and herbs that helps calm the mind and let you sleep soundly.

Auntie Flows Monthly Tea

We saved the best for last.  Yes, this tea is for that time when Auntie Flow shows up and makes things all crampy and uncomfortable.

This blend has cramp bark at the center which has 4 substances that help relax and relieve muscle spasms.  The other components work with the cramp bark to become a complete relief tonic.

SVF Facial Cleaning Pads Redux

We split the facial cleaning pad components apart

We took the facial cleaning pad components apart and made them available separately.  This is part of our ongoing effort to reduce waste from our packaging.

Facial cleaning solution

SVF SolutionThe solution is now available in bulk which you can purchase by the gram.  Our facial solution is made with our own double distilled witch hazel which is infused with rose and hibiscus, and copaiba and tea tree essential oils.

This solution has proven to be effective for treating acne, removing makeup, and refreshing your facial skin.

Organic cotton facial pads

SVF Cotton PadsThese facial pads are super soft and work very well with our solution for applying it to your face.  We have these available for individual sale so you can buy as many or as little as you like.

A container to suit your need

SVF ContainersWe have many containers that we can put the solution in for you.  Previously we packaged the pads in a 4 oz. jar but you can choose a spray bottle or glass round with a dropper.
You can even bring in your own sterilized container and we would be happy to fill it up for you.

Essential Oils Healing Seminar

Have you wanted to learn more about healing with essential oils?

Essential oils are much easier to obtain these days but they don’t come with a handbook, that costs extra.  On Sunday, June 17th at 2:00 PM we will be hosting a seminar at the first Starshine Gathering in the Shoppes at Riverside community room.

We have posted a number of times on essential oils, and hydrosols, as well as our own journey with distilling these oils ourselves.  We are happy to be able to share the knowledge we have learned from our own journey.

Seminar features

This seminar will be a basic introduction to some specific essential oils that are easily obtained and extremely useful for treating everyday ailments.  We will be going over the following topics:

  • What are Essential Oils
This is an explanation of where essential oils come from and how they are obtained
  • The Basic Essential Oil Kit
We will go over a handful of essential oils that you should have around at all times
  • Practical Essential Oil usage
In this section, we will go over what to do with the oils in the basic kit.

It’s Free!

That is right, this seminar is free.  As this is the first Starshine Gathering, and our first seminar, we are giving it away.  Seats are limited and are first come first serve, be sure to come early.

When you arrive be sure to mention that you saw this on our website or on Facebook.  This will enter you in our raffle for a very special item, there will be 5 drawings at the end of the seminar.

Brain Power Tea

Todays Tea Focuses on Brain Power

It’s almost the weekend and I am sure some of us feel absolutely exhausted both mentally and physically.  That is why our tea today has a focus on increasing our brain power and providing that little nudge to help make it to the weekend.  Did I mention it’s purple?

What goes into a Brain Power tea?

Some thought for starters.  There are recipes out there for brain tonics but we like to push the boundaries of our knowledge and ingredients.  My goal was to use ingredients that would be pleasing to the senses of sight, smell, and taste as well as helping the whole body and thus help the brain.

First Butterfly Pea

A little while back I wrote about our new arrival of Butterfly Pea tea which is used in Asian and Ayurvedic medicine to treat mental disorders, improve mental acuity, and lift the mood.  It also turns any clear liquid blue and reacts wonderfully with other herbs that alter color.

The flavor of this ingredient is very delicate so it needs to be balanced well with the other ingredients so it does not get lost.

Lemongrass

What doesn’t this herb do?  It has a wonderfully light citrus flavor and with it a list of benefits that doesn’t quit.  I chose lemongrass for this tea primarily for its antioxidants to add a boost to your immune system. This will help ensure you get through to the weekend without catching any nasty bugs along the way.

Hibiscus

The tea from this beautiful flower is tangy and adds a red hue to the tea.  Hibiscus has also been used to help cool the body and treat heart conditions.  As we transition into Summer our weather is playing some very tricky games and it certainly has my body confused as to whether I should be hot or cold.  Hibiscus is a wonderful way to help regulate your body temperature and keep your heart healthy.  A healthy heart is going to make sure your brain and body are getting the power they need to keep you energized and alert.

The red of the Hibiscus combined with the blue from the Butterfly Pea make this a splendid, and almost electric, purple.  Definitely a delight for your eyes.

Galangal

Galangal is of the ginger family and possesses much of the same properties as ginger but with a more unique flavor.  Gingers, like Galangal, are great for the digestive system and help stimulate the body.  This stimulant property helps the other herbs do their job more effectively.

Stevia Leaf

We have a lot of sour and spicy going on with some of the other herbs so we need to sweeten this up a bit and take the pucker out.  Stevia is a great sweetener as it is up to 30 times sweeter than sugar yet only has 1 calorie per 10 leaves.  As I only used 1/2 tsp. for this tea that is most likely about 1 1/2 to 2 calories.  Happy not breaking your diet to be healthy.

We have so much fun creating new combinations.  Be sure to come down and try out our tea of the day and perhaps even make your own.

Essential Oil Portable Bundle

Prototype Essential Oil Portable Bundle

EO To Go BundleWe have been working on a carrying case to make it easy to carry a variety of essential oils, carrier oils, mixing vessels, and droppers and we have the first prototype finished.

Our goal was to make something that would be easy to stash in a bag, open and close easily, and have everything ready to go.  We are working on the closure to make something that is elegant and functional at the same time.

12 1/2 Dram vials

Bundle OpenRight off the bat you can see that there are 12 1/2 dram vials.  This allows you to have a good variety of essential oils, a few carrier oils, a tincture or two, and leave a couple empty for mixing.

Work areaThe cover flap doubles as a work area.  Since we will be making this out of cloth it is easy to wash, and sterilize if needed, giving you a clean surface to work on where ever you may be.

Handy Storage Pouch

Small PocketOn the other end is a handy little storage pouch for stowing things like the glass tube portion of the droppers or other small items.

On the final product the opening will most likely be on the opposite side and will have a zipper as currently it is a little wonky.  We may even sew some elastic on the inside so the dropper tubes would not be loose.

When It’s Ready

We are hoping to have the final design finished by mid-summer.  Once it is finished we will have versions with empty vials and some with pre-filled vials with a small insert on what the oils are and how to use them as well as some recipes.

New Herbal Arrivals: Butterfly Pea, Elderberry, and Hawthorn Berries!

New Herbal Arrivals

We are always adding to our inventory and our new herbal arrivals are amazing.

Butterfly Pea Tea

Clitoria TernateaClitoria Ternatea, also known as butterfly pea, Asian pidgeon wings, Shankapushi, and other names, is a flower that grows in tropical Asia, Thailand, and Malaysia.
Primarily used in treating neurological issues, especially memory and depression, it has other health benefits that Ayurvedic medicine has benefited from for generations.

Another unique property to this herb is that it will turn any clear liquid blue.  This is very whimsical and can be fun for parties as you can color your drinks naturally.  We added this to some hibiscus tea and it turned a beautiful purple.

Elderberry

ElderberriesLong known for their powerful antioxidants elderberries have been used to boost the immune system, prevent and cure colds and flu, lower cholesterol and more.  These have been a bit difficult to get lately as they have been in large demand due to a powerful flu season.

We like to combine these with other healing herbs to create even more powerful infusions that help everyone get over sickness faster and even prevent getting sick in the first place.

Hawthorn Berries

Hawthorn BerriesHawthorn is a well established mild heart tonic which has been especially useful in treating congestive heart failure.  We have had the cut leaves and flowers in stock for some time which are perfect for making an infusion, but the berries are what you want to use when making a decoction or tincture.

Still Relocation Complete

Our Still Has a New Home

Still New LocationSince moving into our new store we have been, slowly, moving production here and today we got the still moved and started a distillation of Witch Hazel.  After that is finished we will start getting caught up with some co-op distillations of Sage and Rosemary that Joshua Francy brought us.

We are very excited to have the still moved as this will allow us to run it much more often and we won’t have to buy so much ice as it has it’s own cold water source now.  Previously we had a bucket of ice water that was pumped into the condenser which draws the steam from the column and cools it down.  This was rather cumbersome as we had to monitor the temperature of the water in the bucket and add more ice to keep it cool as well as remove water so it did not overflow.

Next time you are here be sure to stop in and ask if we are distilling anything, we would love to show you what we are up to.
